    Seattle Public Schools is committed to ensuring high expectations and high quality schools for every student.

    As part of a system-wide effort to increase the number of Seattle Public School students who graduate from high school prepared for college and the 21st century workforce, Seattle Public Schools has committed to aligning curriculum in core academic subjects across all high schools.

    Educational excellence and equity for every student is goal one of our district's Strategic Plan. Our academic program is grounded in standards-based curriculum, with strong, targeted instruction delivered by highly qualified teachers to ensure that every student graduates ready for college, career and life.

    English Language Arts

    The Seattle Public Schools English Language Arts Scope and Sequence, designed by our language arts educators in 2014 and based on Common Core standards for reading, writing, speaking and listening, provides an overall learning map for teachers. Your child’s classroom teacher can provide more information on these grade-level learning goals. In 2016-17, we are reviewing new materials for English language arts in kindergarten through fifth grade. Visit our ELA K-5 Adoption page for more information.

    Science

    With support provided by Washington state and the U.S. Department of Education, teachers are learning to implement the recently adopted Next Generation Science Standards. A transition to a scope and sequence aligned to the new standards will begin in spring of 2018. The state will assess students on the news standards beginning in 2018.

    Social Studies

    New textual materials have been adopted for our middle school social studies program in 2015-16. A committee of educators and community members carefully examined and recommended instructional materials that are aligned to the Washington State Social Studies Standards and college and career readiness expectations. The committee also looked for cultural relevance and accessibility.

    Visual and Performing Arts

    The Creative Advantage is Seattle Public Schools’ arts plan, with the vision of ensuring every student at every school has the opportunity to learn through the arts, every year. To realize this vision, the Creative Advantage is a public-private partnership that includes Seattle Public Schools, the Seattle Office of Arts and Culture, and The Seattle Foundation. Please check with your neighborhood school to learn about its arts offerings.     Physical Education and Health

    We offer a quality Physical Education program that builds knowledge, fitness, movement skills, social well-being and confidence so all students can enjoy a healthy active lifestyle. Our Physical Education and Health Literacy program provides all teachers with a detailed PreK-12 Curriculum Guide aligned to standards and best practices.  

    Career and Technical Education

    Seattle Public Schools offers a wide range of programs that provide students with a head start on college and careers in high-skill, high-wage and high-demand occupations. These fall under the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Department.

    World Languages

    The district offers a variety of world languages, including Chinese, French, Latin, Japanese and Spanish. To learn more about Dual Language Programs in Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, and Spanish, visit SPS International Education. Students need to earn two high school credits in the same world language in order to apply for admission to a four-year college in our state, and starting with the class of 2021, two credits of world languages will be a graduation requirement in Seattle. In addition to taking middle and high school language classes, students can test their language proficiency and may qualify for World Languages Competency-Based Credits. At high school graduation, students who demonstrate speaking and literacy skills in a language besides English may qualify for the State Seal of Biliteracy.
