Helen Joung has been selected as the executive director of schools for the Southwest region for Seattle Public Schools. She comes to the position after serving as principal of Olympic Hills Elementary for the past four years.
The executive director of schools position is critical to students’ success. Executive directors focus on school improvement, accountability, principal performance and work to effectively engage the communities of their schools.
Joung was selected from a field of 22 applicants through a rigorous interview process that included principals, assistant principals and central office leaders. Joung was the clear choice. She has demonstrated her commitment to and expertise in eliminating opportunity gaps and accelerating learning for all students. Under Joung’s leadership, Olympic Hills became one of the highest gap-closing elementary schools in the state of Washington.
Joung immigrated to the United States with her family when she was 7 years old. She grew up in Bellingham, Washington. After earning her Bachelor of Arts in psychology from the University of Washington, she moved to the east coast to attend Teachers College, Columbia University and received a Master of Arts in Curriculum and Teaching as well as a Master of Education in Educational Leadership.
She returned to Washington after living in New Jersey for 10 years. Currently, Joung is enrolled in the Leadership for Learning doctorate program at the University of Washington. She will earn her doctorate in educational leadership and policy studies in the Spring 2018.
“As a parent of three children in public education, I understand and value family and community partnerships,” said Joung. “I’m excited to serve the southwest region in this capacity and look forward to getting to know the community.”
After spending the month of August learning about the southwest region and the schools’ strengths and needs, there will be an opportunity planned for the community to meet Helen Joung in September.
