We believe that the responsibility for student success is broadly shared by District staff, administrators, instructors, communities, and families. We are focused on closing the opportunity gap and creating learning communities that provide support and academic enrichment programs for all students. Additionally, we believe that it is the right of every student to have an equitable educational experience.
Seattle Public Schools is a diverse community of 97 schools serving nearly 52,000 students. Our student enrollment is projected to increase for the next five years. As the largest school system in the state of Washington, we offer a broad range of educational programs and learning opportunities.
Seattle students and staff represent many cultures and ethnic groups.More than 132 languages are spoken in our schools. Our work is driven by our mission that all students graduate ready for college, career, and life.
Career Advancement and Support
To support and mentor our teachers, Seattle Public Schools has a professional growth and evaluation system. The system is tied to student achievement and includes increased collaboration time with colleagues, career ladder opportunities, and stipends to recognize exceptional teachers and teachers who assume additional responsibilities.
The system’s evaluation ratings (Distinguished, Proficient, Basic and Unsatisfactory) are based on the Charlotte Danielson Framework for Teaching. Teachers who model innovative instructional and professional practice have the opportunity to be recognized with stipends and career ladder opportunities.
