BEX: Building Excellence

The Building Excellence capital program enables Seattle Public Schools to continue the construction of new school buildings and new additions and major renovations to existing buildings, ensuring every student a safe and productive learning environment.

Building Excellence is a six-year capital program approved by Seattle voters. There have been four Building Excellence levies/bonds since 1995. BEX I Levy passed in 1995 with $330 million; BEX II, a $398 million levy, was approved in 2001; the $490 million BEX III Bond was approved in 2007; and the BEX IV capital levy for $694.9 million was approved by voters in 2013. These three programs have replaced, renovated, and modernized schools throughout the district. In addition, technology and infrastructure has been upgraded.

Design Standards

Capital Projects and Planning Department revised the pre-design process for new schools and renovating existing schools in October 2012. Traditionally, architects base school designs on a predefined set of guidelines that set space requirements for elementary, middle, and high schools. With the this design process, each school now has more flexibility in adapting the design to fit the needs of its learning community. The process also emphasizes the importance of aligning the design with the school's transformation plan.
