BEX: Building Excellence

Background

Capital levies are part of Seattle Public Schools’ long-range plan to upgrade and renovate aging school facilities on a planned and predictable timetable.

The Building Excellence Capital Levy enables Seattle Public Schools to continue the construction of new school buildings and new additions and major renovations to existing buildings, ensuring every student a safe and productive learning environment.

There have been four Building Excellence levies/bonds since 1995. The $330 million BEX I Levy was approved by Seattle voters in 1995. BEX II, a $398 million levy, was approved by Seattle voters in 200. BEX III, for $490 million, was approved by voters in 2007. In 2013, Seattle voters approved the BEX IV capital levy for $694.9 million. By voting to approve these levies, Seattle voters made it possible for the district to replace, renovate and modernize schools throughout the district. In addition, technology and infrastructure has been upgraded.
