Task Force for Supplementary K-5 Gender-Identity Materials

Seattle Public Schools sought volunteers from schools (K-5) and the community to review and select materials to address portions of the Washington State Reading and Writing standards as well as the new Washington State Health Education standards.

This year-long Task Force vetted materials and helped create literacy-based lessons with gender-focused books appropriate for K-5 classrooms. Specifically, the focus was gender expression and gender identity. Task Force members were selected to represent diverse perspectives.

Once the Task Force evaluated and selected books for this project, designed corresponding lessons to support teachers in delivering effective instruction aligned to the standards. These lessons were created last school year then piloted in classrooms in 2017

The application period for this team has been closed.
