2019 Eliminating Opportunity Gaps Impact Report

Create Safe and Healthy School Climates where students are supported and engaged

The SPS Division of Equity, Partnerships and Engagement collaborated with several departments to develop strategies and tools to create safe and healthy school climates where students feel supported and engaged.  We focused on five specific initiatives:

    • Identity Safety
    • Welcoming Environments
    • Student Voice
    • School-wide Expectations
    • Restorative Practices

In order to gain in-depth understanding of the challenges and shared principles for improvement, we developed a Network Improvement Community (NIC) to guide adults and support our racial equity work.  From October 2018 through May 2019, a series of three consensus-building meetings were held for each of the above initiatives.  The meetings included a mix of internal and external stakeholders and were facilitated by school leaders.

The NIC’s identified elements of a common definition (What), named the importance of each initiative (Why), and identified tangible actions for implementation in schools (How).  Click on the menus below to learn more.
