    Paid Sick Leave for Hourly Employees starting Jan 1, 2018

    In November 2016, Initiative 1433 was passed by Washington voters to increase the state minimum wage and requires employers to provide their employees with paid sick leave beginning January 1, 2018. Paid sick leave is now available to newly eligible employees to care for their health and the health of their families.


    Hourly employees (including part-time workers, short-term substitutes and seasonal workers) who were not previously eligible to accrue sick leave at Seattle Public Schools will be eligible for paid sick leave. This only impacts employees who were not already receiving paid sick leave.

    Newly eligible employees (i.e., hourly employees) who are employed on or before January 1, 2018, will accrue paid sick leave for all hours worked beginning on January 1, 2018. Employees hired after January 1, 2018, begin accruing paid sick leave upon the commencement of his or her employment.


    Hourly employees (including part-time workers, short-term substitutes and seasonal workers) will accrue paid sick leave at a minimum rate of 1 hour of paid sick leave for every 40 hours worked.

    Unused paid sick leave of 40 hours or less will be carried over to the following year.


    Eligible employees are entitled to use accrued paid sick leave beginning on the 90th calendar day after the start of their employment.

    Some usage reasons include:

    • To care for themselves or their family members.
    • When the employees’ workplace or their child's school or place of care has been closed by a public official for any health-related reason.
    • For absences that qualify for leave under the state's Domestic Violence Leave Act.
