Remote Start for Preschool and Kindergarten Students

Seattle Public Schools will launch the 2020-21 school year remotely for students in preschool through 12th grade. All kindergarten, Head Start, Developmental Preschool, and SPS-run Seattle Preschool Program (SPP and SPP-Plus) students start on Tuesday, September 8. Students in grades 1-12 will start on Friday, September 4.

The week of September 4-11 will focus on creating a strong start to the year, supporting students’ social and emotional well-being, and culturally responsive community building. Full instructional days will begin Sept. 14.

For this week only, instruction will be limited while:

    • Teachers and preschool/kindergarten families meet for Family Connection Virtual Visits.
    • Staff get more training on remote teaching strategies and technology tools.
    • Teachers plan engaging lessons and time for peer interactions between students – because students’ social-emotional health and wellness are our top priority.
    • Schools loan iPads to each preschool through 2nd grade student who need them, and families sign up for free Comcast internet or are given a hotspot as needed. You will be contacted directly when devices are ready.
    • The district launches eight temporary Family Resource Tech Centers around the city to distribute devices and help with technology and translation software.
    • Learning resources (school supplies, printed lessons, etc.) are prepared to send home.

Family Connection Virtual Visits: Because families know their children best, we want to meet individually with your family before September 14 to learn about your child’s strengths and needs. We will call the phone number on file for your child to schedule an online meeting time (30-40-minute) during the week of Sept. 4-11. This Family Connection visit is a chance for you (along with your child and any others you invite) to talk about your hopes and wishes for your child and what makes them special. Please let us know if you would like us to arrange for an interpreter when you schedule your virtual visit time.

SPP Tuition: Families participating in 100% remote learning with SPS Seattle Preschool Program will not pay tuition. If SPS returns to an in-person or hybrid model this school year, this may change. We will communicate any change in tuition policy with you.
