Brandon Hersey Appointed District VII (7) School Board Director

The Board of Directors for Seattle Public Schools voted Wednesday, September 18, 2019, to appoint Brandon Hersey as the District VII Director representing Southeast Seattle. The District VII seat became vacant after the resignation of Betty Patu. Read the announcement about Director Patu.

Per state law (RCW 28A.343.370), because the vacancy occurred outside the regular election cycle, the current board appointed Director Hersey to serve for the remainder of the term.

School Board President Leslie Harris stated after the final vote, "We are thrilled to welcome Director Hersey as a colleague to the SPS Board of Directors. This process has shined the light on how many exceptionally gifted people want to assist the 53,000 students in Seattle and its taxpaying base, and were willing to provide their talents, time, and heart to this important job. We had a wealth of candidates and we have enormous respect for each and every one that applied. The process, though seemingly slow, was one of the most transparent appointment processes in the history of this state. The Directors take their statutory duties very seriously and thank the District VII community and the SPS staff for assisting in this effort."

The appointment follows an extensive public input process and two public forums. Thank you to the Seattle Public Schools community, District VII families, students, and partners in supporting this important effort. To learn more visit the Director Appointment webpage.

After being sworn in, Director Hersey joined new colleagues on the dais as the board continued its regularly scheduled meeting.

"Thank you to all the families, educators, and District VII community members who have supported me throughout this process. I am excited to continue working with you all in the pursuit of making our school district a better place for all kids, especially those furthest away from educational justice," responded Director Brandon Hersey to the appointment as the District VII Director.

Director Brandon Hersey will serve on the board in the District VII position for the remainder of the term, which concludes with the November 2021 election. He may then choose to run for the position in the 2021 election cycle.

"We are very grateful for all the candidates’ interest in and engagement with Seattle Public Schools. They all deserve a big 'thank you' and Director Hersey will receive the district’s full support as (they) take on this very challenging and extremely important job," stated Superintendent Denise Juneau.
