Findings from the Listening and Learning Tour

This fall I launched a comprehensive Listening and Learning Tour as part of my entry plan. I met with many of you, in schools and in community. It was important to hear directly from students, staff, families, and partners about the district’s strengths and challenges as I determine, with the school board, our future work.

My goal was to build a longer table, inviting new voices and perspectives to the conversation and intentionally engaging with families and students the district has historically underserved. I want to thank you for welcoming me to Seattle and sharing your ideas and personal stories.

I learned there is good work happening around the district and in our schools, including student achievement and graduation rate increases. And there is still a lot of work to be done. I encourage you to watch the brief video below to learn about a few of the high-level priorities shared across our community.

You can also visit the tour webpage to learn more about the top priorities, review the final report and comments gathered at each session, as well as how community feedback will inform the district’s next strategic plan.

One thing was clear during my tour – Seattle cares deeply about social justice and racial equity. So do I. These are the community values that most attracted me to Seattle Public Schools. We can’t be a truly great district and city until all our children are thriving. This commitment to racial equity is a strong foundation to build from and a value we will need to return to as we address historical injustices in education.

Thank you again for participating in my learning, and I am not done. I will be out again in January to gather additional feedback on the draft strategic plan.

In Seattle, we must all rise together. One District – One City – One Future. Together, we will make sure all our students’ futures are bright, that they are successful, and they are prepared to live their dreams.
