Kindergarten Readiness Guidelines

Parents and families have a very important role as their child's first teacher. Children learn in different ways and at different rates. They come to school with varying skills.

Our kindergarten readiness guidelines highlight some of the skills typical of 5 and 6-year olds. Playing, reading, counting and talking together - in your home language - and helping your child learn some basic self-care skills will help him or her to be ready for school. Learn more about preparing for kindergarten.

WaKIDS

Washington Kindergarten Inventory of Developing Skills (WaKIDS) is a process of connecting the adults in children's lives so that they can be ready to start school. Schools around the state began to implement WaKIDS in 2011, with additional schools joining yearly. In 2017-18, all of Washington's pubic elementary schools will participate in WaKIDS, which includes 3 parts:

1. Family connection
2. Whole-child assessment
3. Early learning collaboration

Family Connection Visits 9/6-8/17

Before starting school, each new kindergartner's family is offered the chance to meet with their student's teacher to begin building a home-school partnership.  So that teachers can meet with families, the kindergarten start date is postponed three days, to the Monday after Labor Day - September 11, 2017. Students in grades 1 through 12 will begin school on Wed., Sept. 6.

2016 Family Connection Survey Results

Last October 2016, we asked families for feedback about their Family Connection visits. We heard from nearly 25% (1049) of all 4861 families. The results were very positive. See the questions and responses here.
